The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is an entrance examination conducted in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical and dental courses (MBBS/BDS) in government or private medical colleges across the country. NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

• They must be Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
• They must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete it on or before December 31 of the year of admission.
• They must have passed the 10+2 examination or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
• They must have secured a minimum aggregate of 50% (40% for reserved categories) in the qualifying examination.

1. Exam Pattern: NEET is a pen-and-paper-based examination with a duration of 3 hours. The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) divided equally among Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). Each correct answer carries 4 marks, while 1 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer.

As per the Supreme Court’s order in 2016, NEET would be the only examination to fill the All India Quota Seats as well as the State Level Quota seats across the country. The examination is also valid for filling private college seats across the country.

• There are three different kinds of seats available in all Medical Colleges across the country. In the Government Medical Colleges of the country, there is a 15 percent All India Quota.
• Students from any part of the country can apply for the 15 percent seats. For instance, say one government medical college in State A has a total of 100 seats. Out of these 100,
• 15 seats would be reserved for All India Quota. These seats are then further divided into reserved and general categories.
• 15 percent of these seats are reserved for the SC or Scheduled Caste candidates,
• 7.5 percent for the ST or Scheduled Tribe Candidates and another
• 27% for the OBC (noncreamy layer) candidates.

2. The exam covers topics from Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. Candidates appearing for NEET shall prepare thoroughly to secure a good score.

The duration of the paper is 3 hours. Each correct answer attracts 3 marks and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. For every unanswered question, marks are neither awarded nor deducted.

Also, there is a further horizontal reservation for Persons with disability of 3 percent. In case the candidates for the same are not available then the seats are allotted to the individuals belonging to that category. For instance, there are two students who both belong to the OBC category and are contending for the 4th seat, but one student has a physical handicap as well. Then that candidate would get the preference of the 4th seat before the other OBC candidate.
